Comprehension Reading | Paperless Classroom
Comprehension reading and deciphering is taught to kids from an early age.
Once they learn enough vocabulary and can read sentences, understand the contextual and literal meaning, and connect the dots, comprehension reading becomes a major part of their education.
However, this task is not as easy as it seems.
It's not just the students who find it difficult to read and understand comprehension.
Rather, parents and teachers sometimes find it difficult to make the kids understand the inner meaning, be it a small text paragraph or a long comprehension story.
The following article will focus on the problems faced with comprehension reading and how to solve them.
Challenges in comprehension reading and understanding
A student's perspective
1. The comprehension is too long, and hard to remember the events.
2. I'm failing to understand what the comprehension exactly wants to say.
3. I'm not certain which parts of the text are important and which aren't.
4. I can't correlate the facts presented in the comprehension with the knowledge I have.
5. I don't know the meaning of half of the words, and using a dictionary seems to be a hassle.
6. I can't find any interest in the comprehensive text. Those aren't for kids!
A parent's perspective
1. How can my child not summarize the book which is so easy?
2. My kid can paraphrase the story for me but can't explain the text's real meaning.
3. I can't understand how my child is portraying the characters in his/her mind.
4. My child cannot relate the story events with the ones that happen in real life.
A teacher's perspective
1. He/she focuses on a particular aspect too much that the entire meaning becomes a mess.
2. A student can explain the results as per his/her thoughts, but he/she can't explain the reasons behind his/her conclusion.
3. She is not thinking beyond what's being explained in words in the comprehension.
4. A little difficulty in words is creating problems for most students due to their poor vocabulary.
How to overcome difficulties in comprehension reading and understanding?
Resolution for students
1. Start making notes and outlines while reading the comprehension
2. Make a list of all new words you are coming across
3. Start with short comprehensions and understand their meaning
4 .Take help from parents or teachers to verify your conclusions are right
5. Try to relate the incident explained in the story with your real life
Resolution for parents
1. Give your child some time to get accustomed to literature
2. Make them read newspapers to increase vocabulary
3. Encourage them to write down the mental images as they progress in reading the comprehensions
4. Use multiple comprehension books on different genres to widen their knowledge
5. Explain the meaning to them at first and ask them to write it down the next day
Resolution for teachers
1. Ask them open-minded questions and try to understand what they are explaining
2. Always ask them to explain the sentences and the context in which it was said
3. Ask your students about the reason for narration and to whom it has been said
4. Always inquire about what they consider is the moral of the story
5. Teach them the predictive methods for understanding and deciphering the comprehensions
Conclusion
Comprehension reading and deciphering is a tough job for kids.
But, with proper planning and encouragement from parents and teachers, the entire task can be made easier.
But comprehension reading should be made a habit for regular practice as it will help the kids be in a rhythm with literary contexts and real-life events.
