Ideas carry the capacity to change the world. They have helped form and advance human civilization over the years.

Sudden “giant ideas” from inventors or entrepreneurs have contributed to our benefit in society.

How is it that a “pair” of brilliant ideas come from individuals of the same family?

More than 50 years ago, a couple founded the Mattel company, which has modernized the toy industry.

These toys, made by Elliot and Ruth Handler, are still found in abundance after half a century later.

The Mother of Barbie

Ruth was an aspiring businesswoman who was always in pursuit of new and better ideas.

Someday, as she saw her daughter Barbara play with “paper dolls”, the idea just dawned on her.

She came up with the concept of more durable dolls. The first Barbie doll was formed and named in honor of Ruth's daughter Barbara.

The product was a great hit when it was launched in 1959.

The Barbie doll of the year 1959 glanced sideways with a closed smile. However, in 1971, the Malibu Barbie offered an entirely different makeover that continues till today.

The Barbie family came to form over the passing years. Barbie has several friends, and one of her friends, "Ken", is named after the Handler couple's son Kenneth.

The conception of the Barbie doll changed the appearance of the toy-doll industry.

The Barbie doll was the first toy that had a woman's appearance, contrary to the earlier baby dolls. The characteristic feature of the toy inspired young girls to become independent and working women.

The Barbie doll toy has helped to open doors to almost 180 different careers.

The birth of Barbie dolls came on the 9th of March 1959. The complete name of the so-called “Barbie doll” stands for “Barbara Millicent Roberts”. These Barbie dolls depict more than 40 different countries from across the globe.

The company “Mattel” rose to fame during the early 1960s with the Barbie doll model.
