Rhyming Games | Paperless Classroom

Rhyming Games

Rhyme is an integral component of poetry and songs.

There are many books where the narrative follows a rhyming pattern.

It is very common among the pre-schools to teach children nursery rhymes.

Some children even love to recite, sing or read these rhymes and find them very interesting as a course of their study.

Apart from the general quality of rhyming, it can help the children to develop better spelling skills.

For instance, if they are taught similar-sounding words like cat, hat, and Sat, it would be easier for the children to memorize the spelling.

Teachers can teach the children to rhyme families to ease the process of learning, reading and spelling.

What is the importance of rhyming for children?

Developing a child’s phonological awareness is an important part of childrens’ learning process.

However, there are many children who struggle to memorize simple spellings.

With the rhyming pattern, students can develop better reading capabilities.

As per some psychological research, students can benefit from this instruction on rhyme recognition coupled with fun games that focus on the particular skill.

How to include rhyming in their curriculum?

Teachers can consider various ways to include activities related to rhyming.

On the other hand, children can also get along with rhyme within their daily activities.

Here are some resources of rhyming that would help the children to adapt their skills quickly:

Rhyme books

There are many rhyming books in children’s literature.

If they can make a habit of reading those stories or poems on a daily basis, they will eventually remember the patterns very smoothly.

Rhyming activities

In monetary schools, teachers often introduce the children to various rhyming activities to make them well-versed with the words and their rhythm.

Rhyming words

For example, you can take body part games and start playing rhyming games with the children.

In this game, the teachers are advised to take one name of body parts, for instance.

Eye, head, etc. and the children will provide a word with the same rhyming pattern.

Space-themed rhyme

You can narrate the children with space-themed rhymes like:

a. One little two little three little planets, Four little five little six little planets,

b. Mercury Venus and the Earth, Mars Jupiter and Saturn,

c. Twinkle, twinkle, little star, I know what you really are: Giant ball of glowing gas, one of the billions in a mass

Word family chart

This activity refers to the group of words with similar ending words. For instance: cat, mat, hat, rat, etc. These words belong to the ‘at’ family.

To encourage the children more with these activities, teachers can use pictures instead of words.

They can also include oral rhyming activity to make the process more exciting for the kids.

At the same time, they can include writing activity and diagrams for advanced learners.
